Ex-wives

As I near the age of eighty

And reflect on things in life

A phenomenon I’ve noticed

Involves a man and his former wife

I’ve had some friends long married

Had their fill of connubial bliss

Split stuff fifty-fifty

And said we’re through with this

There are some former couples

Who hardly need a nudge

To hold on to animosity

And forever bear a grudge

But other former couples

Despite their later leaning

Realize their early married life

Had purpose and deep meaning

For Men, sometime after their divorce

Rid of all their strife

They find themselves nostalgic

And think of their ex-wife

Sometimes the ex-wife feels the same

After all, they are former mates

And before you know it

They are going out on dates

So, they start the process over

And, again, become good friends

Some of them even remarry

Throwing caution to the wind

I have even heard of couples

Who’ve married each other more than twice

To me, that seems excessive

But, hey, let’s be nice

Back to those who married twice

My heart goes out to them

They know that there is value there

They’re trying to find and hold that gem

When a former couple remarries

May their second marriage be blessed

We must applaud their courage

And wish them all the best
