Luxury Barge in Burgundy

Down in Northern Burgandy
South of Gay Paree
Private boat, four other couples
Lynda Lou and me

 

On the Canal de Bourgogne 

Cruising on a luxury barge

Sounds like an oxymoron

But we were living large

 

Three gourmet meals per day

Different wine with every course

With such pleasant company

A trip with no remorse 

 

The barge was named La Belle Epoque

Translates to "The Beautiful Time"

A synopsis of the cruise,

Company, food and wine

 

Barge slipped along so slowly 

You could enjoy the countryside 

Stroll the path by the canal

Reboard later, rejoin the ride

 

Life on the barge was very nice 

Had side trips every day

One day to an 800-year-old Abbey

A UNESCO site in Vezelay 

 

On another day we visited 

The historic village of Chablis

Toured winery Domain Laroche

Hundreds of years of wine history 

 

Other side trips included 

A display of falconry

An afternoon in Auxerre

Ancient city in Burgundy 

 

The highlight of the side trips

Was, I think, in the main 

Visit to Chateau de Ricey Bas

 And the story of Taisne Ricour Champagne 

 

Charles de Taisne and his wife

Growers of champagne extraordinaire

Welcomed us to lunch at their chateau

Made us glad that we were there

 

The camaraderie on the barge was great 

The trip was lots of fun

Jokes and good humor all the time

Still trying to disremember the following "Old Dad" pun

 

Duck tells a lady pharmacist 

"I'd like to buy a condom, Ma'am."

She asked "Shall I put it on your bill?"

He said “What kind of duck do you think I am?” 

 

It was a lovely seven-days

But good times must always end

As we all left for other places

We said goodbye to friends

Amsterdam's Red-Light District

Lynda and I were in Amsterdam   Early evening in Old Town Walked into the Red-Light District Just to look around   No brothel signs or markers Just three red lights above some doors Suggesting companionship for hire I guess, that and so much more   Could see the profile of a woman Through some gauzy reddish curtains Slightest indication given About what we knew for certain    Atmosphere subdued and quiet Not like the streets nearby Where cannabis, vape and edibles Let you pick your way to fly   We were there too early Area was almost deserted  Opportunities and possibilities  At that time were quietly skirted    Don’t know what I expected  Didn’t plan to venture there Not trying to conduct any business  We were just a curious pair   It was a very low-key adventure  Uneventful, one would say  Guess that’s all one can expect At the wrong time of the day

Yogi Berra Style

My wife handed me a grocery list As I headed for the store She had added comments on her list To help me with this chore   A note by an item on her list  Really made me smile She'd written “If they don’t have it, don’t get it” In true Yogi Berra style   “If they don’t have it, don’t get it” Like Yogi himself would say Meaning "Don't go elsewhere for it, We'll get it another day"   Yogi, the great Yankee’s catcher Who's in the Baseball Hall of Fame  Maybe more famous for his malaprops Than the way he played the game   Many of these “yogi-isms” Were made by others in Yogi's stead Yogi himself once declared  "I never said half the things I said"    A well-known one of Yogi's  His logic can’t be doubted “People don’t go there anymore  Because it gets too crowded”   I think of all his quotes  My favorite one endures “If you don’t go to their funeral  They won’t come to yours”   Let’s close with a Yogi saying In a base...
